Women's Soccer Falls Late to South Dakota

Coyotes score four second-half goals to move past Leathernecks

VERMILLION, South Dakota – The Western Illinois women's soccer team took on the Coyotes of South Dakota on Sunday, October 25, in Vermillion, South Dakota. First half goals from Gina Scaffidi and Kayla Kirkwood were not enough as South Dakota scored four times in the second half to take a 4-2 victory. With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 1-5 in Summit League play and 2-13 overall. The Coyotes advance to 4-3 in league play (7-11 overall).

"I'm devastated, we are in pain and we continue to invent new ways to lose.  With 13:46 left on the clock and we have a one-goal lead, to finish the match having not only given up an equalizer but two additional goals hurts in ways I cannot put into words," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites.

Scaffidi kicked off the Western offensive attack in the 7th minute with a shot on goal that was saved by South Dakota's keeper. Less than five minutes later, Kirkwood fed the ball to Scaffidi who booted the ball up and over the keeper's head to give the Leathernecks an early 1-0 lead. Scaffidi followed up with another shot on goal in the 10th minute, forcing the keeper to make another save.

In the 32nd minute, Kirkwood scored her first career goal following a corner kick from Madeline Edwards that sailed to the other side of the goal. Kirkwood gained possession and dribbled the ball up the sideline to beat a Coyote defender and sent the ball in between the posts to extend Western's lead to 2-0.

The Leatherneck defense limited the Coyotes to just two shots during the first half and headed to halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Ten minutes into the second half, South Dakota got on the board when Katlin Ptacek found the ball following a corner kick and tapped it in to bring the score to 2-1.

The Coyotes took off on a late scoring surge in the second half. USD's equalizer came in the 78th minute as Corey Strang set up for a penalty kick following a Western yellow card. South Dakota scored two more times in the 79th and 81st minute to take a 4-2 lead.

Western would make a final push as the game clock ran down. Following a South Dakota foul, Scaffidi set up for a free kick and placed a shot on target but the Coyote defense was there to make the save. In the 89th minute, Skyler Jessop put a shot on a goal that was saved and South Dakota would take the 4-2 victory.

"This is the most difficult season I have ever seen and been a part of. The most difficult part is that we make mistakes in matches that we have covered a million times in training and in talking as a group," added Flogaites. "This is very simple: we have to care more, listen more, and play with a greater level of passion. There isn't a lot to talk about, we have to prove what's inside our hearts and souls this coming weekend."

The Leathernecks will return home for it's last matches of the season on Friday, October 30, at 1 p.m. against South Dakota State. Senior day will take place the following Sunday, November 1, with kick off set for 11 a.m. against North Dakota State.
