Men's Golf Announces 2015 Spring Schedule

The schedule features the 2nd Annual WIU Carlton Oaks Golf Invitational Santee, Calif. as well as the 43rd Annual Beu Mussatto Invitational

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois head men's golf coach Mel Blasi, who is in the midst of his 17th season leading the program, announced the Leathernecks' 2015 spring slate on Thursday (Sept. 17). The schedule features two events hosted by the Fighting Leathernecks in the 2nd Annual Western Illinois University Carlton Oaks Golf Invitational and the 43rd Annual Beu/Mussatto Invitational, as well as three away events before The Summit League Championships in May.

"We are very excited to announce the men's golf team spring season for 2015," said coach Blasi. "Like the spring of 2014, we will once again be hosting two tournaments and an alumni golf outing this coming spring."

For the second consecutive season, WIU will begin its spring schedule on the west coast with the 2nd Annual WIU Carlton Oaks Golf Invitational. The WIU-hosted event is slated to take place February 9-10 in Santee, Calif. at one of the top-rated golf courses in the San Diego area, Carlton Oaks Country Club.

"We are excited to host this tournament again in California, and we will have some new teams entered in the field this year. Carlton Oaks is an outstanding venue, having hosted the PGA Tour Qualifying School in 2008, 2009 and 2010," continued Blasi.

After Western's lone event in February, the Leathernecks head south to Pinehurst, N.C. for their only event in March, the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The event will take place at Pinehurst No. 8 on March 13-15.

"We will return to Pinehurst in 2015 to play the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The tournament is played at Pinehurst #8, one of Tom Fazio's magnificent designs. We are hosting our 5th Annual Alumni Golf Outing at Kiawah Island again in 2015. Details for the alumni event the event are forthcoming. Please check our website for more information," said coach Blasi.

The month of April features three invites in the Midwest for the Leathernecks beginning with the Bradley Invitational (April 3-4) at Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria, Ill. Western will then travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the NYX/Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course on April 11-12.

"We come home from spring break to play in three great tournaments close to home," continued Blasi. "Invites at Bradley and Indiana, and our own 43rd Annual Beu/Mussatto Invitational will provide some great competition for us heading into The Summit League Championships to be held at La Purisima Golf Club in Lompoc, California."

The 43rd Annual Beu/Mussatto concludes the regular season for WIU on April 20-21 at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course.

The Leathernecks will then compete in the 2015 Summit League Championships in Lompac, California (May 1-3) for a chance to participate in the 2015 NCAA Championships.

"Our schedule is a great mix of different competition where we will see teams from all over the United States and the golf courses we play should prepare us well going into the Summit League Championships, which have been moved back to May this year," concluded Blasi.
